The Ultimate Guide to Art Exhibitions in Cambridge
Art Exhibitions in Cambridge

Cambridge is a city where ancient spires meet contemporary creativity, where centuries of academic excellence coexist with a thriving modern arts scene. Whilst visitors flock to admire the historic colleges and architectural marvels, the city’s cultural landscape extends far beyond its famous stone facades. For art enthusiasts and curious explorers alike, Cambridge offers an exceptional array of galleries and exhibitions that showcase both established masters and emerging talents.

At Byard Art, we’ve been part of Cambridge’s cultural fabric since 1998, and we’ve witnessed firsthand how this historic city embraces contemporary art alongside its rich heritage. Whether you’re a local resident seeking weekend inspiration or a visitor planning your Cambridge itinerary, we’ve created this guide to help you navigate the city’s finest art exhibitions, naturally beginning with what we know best: our own gallery in the heart of the historic centre.

Start Your Art Journey at Byard Art

We’re proud to call 14 King’s Parade our home, nestled directly opposite the magnificent King’s College Chapel. Since relocating to Cambridge in 1998 and moving to our current prominent location in 2009, we’ve established ourselves as Cambridge’s leading contemporary art gallery, and we’d love to welcome you through our doors.

Our Current & Upcoming Exhibitions

Our innovative exhibition programme offers a constantly evolving selection of contemporary visual arts across 1,200 square feet of beautifully curated exhibition space spanning two floors. We specialise in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, featuring original pieces that vary in medium, scale, and price point, ensuring there’s something to captivate every visitor who walks in.

Our rolling exhibition schedule means there’s always something new to discover at Byard Art. From landscape paintings that bring the great outdoors into the gallery space to abstract works that challenge perception, each exhibition is carefully curated to showcase the finest contemporary artists. Our current featured artists include Relton Marine, Luke Woodgate, Stephen Outram, and Mark Munroe-Preston.

When you visit, you can also explore works by Theo Crutchley-Mack, whose sculptural approach to painting involves building up wooden panels with multiple layers of splintered wood, creating pieces where underlying textures often take prominence over the paint itself. Meanwhile, Luke Woodgate’s landscape paintings capture the vast horizons and ever-changing skies inspired by his formative travels to the American West.

Make a Day of It: Cambridge’s Art & History Trail

One of the joys of our location on King’s Parade is how easily you can combine a visit to Byard Art with other cultural highlights. We’re surrounded by some of Cambridge’s most treasured attractions, making it simple to create a full day of art and culture. Here are our recommendations for nearby stops that complement your gallery visit perfectly.

King’s College Chapel

After immersing yourself in contemporary art at our gallery, you need only step across the street to appreciate one of England’s most breathtaking architectural achievements. King’s College Chapel, directly opposite Byard Art, represents the pinnacle of late Gothic architecture. Its soaring fan-vaulted ceiling, magnificent stained glass windows, and Rubens’ ‘Adoration of the Magi’ make it an artwork in its own right, a perfect fusion of architecture, art, and history that beautifully complements the modern works you’ll see in our space.

Refuel at a Local Favourite: Bould Brothers Coffee

After a morning exploring Byard Art and the surrounding galleries, we recommend treating yourself to exceptional coffee at Bould Brothers on Round Church Street, just a short stroll from our gallery. This independent café, founded by brothers Max and Alex, has quickly become a local institution since opening.

The tiny original location exudes a cosy, welcoming atmosphere, and the queue that often forms outside is testament to the quality within. Bould Brothers roasts their own coffee and also features guest coffees from some of Europe’s finest roasters. Pair your expertly crafted flat white or cappuccino with one of their Belgian chocolate mochas or an irresistible almond croissant.

The café’s commitment to quality, from six months of barista training to filtered and mineralised water, means every cup is crafted to perfection. With options for organic cow’s, soy, and oat milk, there’s something for everyone. It’s the ideal spot to reflect on the artwork you’ve seen and plan your next Cambridge adventure.
