The short version

What works in this space

01

One confident first piece

Fresh, developer-neutral walls can swallow timid choices. Start with one generous piece in the room you live in most — a large canvas or bold print above the sofa or dining table sets the palette for everything that follows. Go one size larger than feels safe.

02

Colour against the neutral

Magnolia, greige and white gloss need something to push against. Vivid abstracts and expressive landscapes bring warmth and personality that flat-pack prints never will — giving each room its own character while the rest of the scheme stays calm.

03

Craft on every surface

Built-in shelving, window sills and alcoves are made for ceramics, glass and small sculpture. Dimensional pieces soften boxy proportions and catch the light differently through the day — an easy way to layer character into a brand-new space.

People behind the work

Artists to know

Between Two Worlds

Luke Woodgate

Born in 1985 in the south east of England, Luke studied printmaking at Brighton and has shown at the Royal Academy. Shaped by teenage travels in the American West, he paints imagined landscapes that arrive fully formed, often from dreams, in acrylic so finely detailed that a canvas can take months. Vast, light-filled views — the one confident first piece a new home deserves.

Beckie Reed Artwork

Beckie Reed

An Ely-based painter with a first-class degree in Fine Art Painting from Loughborough, Beckie has shown at the RA Summer Exhibition and at art fairs from New York to Hong Kong. Working in layered acrylic, she paints woodland and treescapes, dribbling trunks and branches in a high-gloss medium that balances control with spontaneity.

Rob Walker

A self-taught painter born in Bedfordshire, who learned his craft by copying the Old Masters — Rembrandt, Canaletto and Turner among them. Working in oil, he builds meticulous still lifes of enamel jugs, cans, Delft pottery and fruit, prizing a rich palette, intense light and careful composition. Jewel-bright still lifes that give an open-plan kitchen-diner its focal point.

Anita Klein

Born in Sydney and trained at Chelsea School of Art & the Slade, Anita is a former President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, with work in the British Museum and Arts Council collections. Her linocuts, paintings and ceramics celebrate everyday moments, swimming, family and home, with warmth and humour. Accessible editions and ceramics that let a first collection start well.

Practical notes

Hanging and placement

Hang artwork with its centre at 145–152 cm from the floor — standing eye level. Over sofas and sideboards, aim for a piece or grouping roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath, with 15–25 cm of breathing room above.

Newly plastered walls should be fully dry and decorated before anything heavy goes up, and modern plasterboard needs the right fixings for the weight. We advise on both — and keep works on paper out of direct south-facing sunlight.

Living with the collection

Our team handles bespoke framing in-house — matched to your interior rather than off the shelf — and arranges careful delivery, wrapped and insured, anywhere in the world.

Collections grow room by room. Start with one piece, use the Art Visualiser to plan the next, and add as the house takes shape. We keep a record of what you own for insurance and valuation.
