Artwork Perfect For Hallways

Good art for hallways earns its place: the hallway is the first room guests meet and the one you pass through most, and its long, awkward walls suit artwork better than almost any other space in the house. Byard Art curates paintings, prints and wall pieces for hallways, landings and stairs from over 100 contemporary UK artists, with delivery, expert advice and interest-free Own Art finance handled by our Cambridge gallery.

The short version

What works in this space

01

A welcome that says something

The piece facing the front door is the first thing anyone sees. Make it count: one confident original sets the tone for the whole house — and greets you home every day.

02

Runs, not one-offs

Long walls reward sequence. A run of prints, or a series in a shared palette, turns a corridor into a small gallery — with a rhythm that pulls you through the space.

03

Vertical for narrow spots

Narrow return walls and the slots between doors suit tall, portrait-format works. And stairwells can take real height — often the largest wall in the house, hiding in plain sight.

Artists to know

Monopoly

Laura Jordan

A London printmaker who studied Graphic Design and Editorial Illustration at London College of Communication, Laura creates densely detailed panoramas of the world's cities, packed with humorous vignettes and sly social commentary. Small pen-and-ink drawings are scanned and woven digitally into large limited editions, often hand-finished with pencil, watercolour and collage.

The Golden Gift

Tommy Carlsson

A Swedish painter and graphic artist with studios in Stockholm and Långasjö, Småland, Tommy trained at the art school of Öland and has exhibited across Europe and North America. Inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch realism, he paints trompe l'oeil still lifes in oil — worn objects rendered in precise light and shadow. Illusions that reward a second look at close range — made for the hallway.

Solar Pull

Waller and Hewett

The creative partnership of Ruth Waller and Lee Hewett produces striking bespoke textile wall panels that cross the boundaries between art, design and craft. Working with felted and stitched surfaces in bold, contemporary colourways, they create large-scale installations, no two alike — tactile pieces that add warmth to offices and collaborative spaces.

Before anything goes on a wall

Practical notes

Hanging and placement

Hallways are seen on the move and at close range. Hang at 145–152 cm to centre, keep frames clear of swinging doors and coat hooks, and in narrow halls favour slim frames and glazed works.

On stairs, step the artwork with the flight: keep each piece’s centre a consistent height above the treads, so the run rises with you. We can plan a stairwell hang before anything is drilled.

Living with the collection

Delivery is arranged by the gallery, wrapped and insured, and we advise on the practical details — fixings for busy walls, and which glazed pieces suit halls lit by a single window or overhead spots.

Hallways with little natural light protect works on paper beautifully; sunny glazed porches do not. We flag anything better suited to a shadier wall before it goes home with you.

Hallway artwork, answered

Yes. Use the free Art Visualiser to preview any piece on a photo of your own wall, to scale. You are also welcome to view works at the gallery on King’s Parade, seven days a week.

Slimmer, portrait-format works and small groupings usually beat one wide piece you can never step back from. Measure the wall and viewing distance and we will shortlist to scale.

Follow the flight: keep each work’s centre a consistent height above the treads so the run climbs with the stairs. We can plan the layout with you before any fixings go in.

Hallway pieces range from prints under £600 to statement works for stairwells and landings. A run of three to five prints typically costs less than one large canvas — and changes the space just as much.
