Bio
Teresa Winchester is a printmaker and painter who lives and works in Brighton. She pursued formal art training, studying printmaking at Goldsmiths. Her work is deeply enriched by a love of the natural world, particularly the beauty of plant and animal life. As a child, she was passionate about drawing the pictures suggested by the stories she read, a drive that continues to inform her art.
History
After her studies at Goldsmiths, Teresa had limited opportunity to pursue printmaking while teaching, and for a long while focused on painting, holding exhibitions and open studios in Surrey. She made the decision in 2006 to leave her teaching post to move to Brighton, where her love of printmaking was rekindled upon joining the Brighton Independent Printmakers (BIP) studio. She now works full-time as an artist.
Style & Technique
Winchester’s art tells stories, invoking a sense of magic and dreams. Her work often appears as if the viewer has “slipped into a subconscious world,” where animals and humans interact in fantastical settings, such as girls dancing with hares or rabbits racing through dark forests. She primarily creates her linocuts using an antique Columbian press at the BIP studio. The narrative element, often leaving the viewer to complete the story, is a powerful aspect of her style.
