Kyra Mihailovic

Influenced by nature, Kyra’s work in high-fired stoneware and porcelain explores form, colour and pattern to create ceramics with a strong visual impact that are intended to provoke pleasure when viewed and used. Her pieces are mainly hand-thrown on the wheel: texture, balance, scale and durability are all important components of the work.

Kyra’s long experience of working as a teacher of art and design has exposed her to the techniques of numerous art forms and the working methods of many artists that have greatly enriched her practice and visual vocabulary. Throughout her teaching career she continued to make ceramics and explore techniques and ideas. She now explores this knowledge through the creation of ceramics full time from her garden studio in south east London.

Kyra’s ceramics are made in vitrified porcelain or stoneware and are painted with underglaze colours and oxides; they are glazed internally and occasionally fully glazed. Most of her work is wheel thrown and shapes are further refined through turning. The colours are applied to greenware so that they penetrate and permanently bond with the surface of the clay.
