Gilda, aka Samantha Cross, studied History of Art at UCL and completed a fine art foundation course in Cambridge. Her soft sculptural techniques and style led her from the art world into the fashion and textiles industry where she spent many years working both as a bag designer and designing fabric prints. Her interest in fabric manipulation and surface decoration is now an imperative part of Gilda and Lily’s collaborative work.
Lily, aka Katherine Mann, studied 19th Century French and German Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge and went on to work in media, curation and interior design. Her fascination with 19th century Europe plays an intrinsic part in her artwork
Their shared interest in the curation of entomological and osteological finds, has inspired and driven their 2018/19 series of collaborative work, “Curios Eulogy”.
Deconstructed landscapes take on the role of story boards for the purposeful and precise curation of natural vintage specimens. Dusty doors of precious antique collections are thrown open, revealing the beauty and fragility of preserved life for a new generation to appreciate. The series comprises of 15 canvases of varying sizes and remastered ‘cabinets de curiosites’. Each work incorporates 24 carat gold leaf and a real diamond twinkles from Gilda and Lily’s favourite addition to the canvas. The series was launched at an exhibition at Artworks in November 2018.
